Log into your AT&T wireless account and use chat or call 611 during business hours and ask to have your $36.00 upgrade fee waived. I've upgraded several lines over the last couple of months and I have been able to get all of my upgrade fees waived. You can get it waived before you receive your next monthly bill, or after the upgrade fee appears in your monthly bill.

The customer service rep will give you a canned response when you ask for the upgrade fee to be waived:
"The upgrade fee is to allow us to assist customers with recommending new equipment, offering special offers and discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, and supporting the returns process within 14 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs."

Be nice and say that you've been a loyal customer for so many years and that you commited to stay with AT&T for another 2 years ... ya da ya da ya da.

    You should receive this reply:
"I will go ahead and adjust that charge for you, but please remember that everytime that you will doing an upgrade there will be $36 standard fee. Stay in this chat while I apply those adjustments for you."

If at first you don't suceed, chat or call 611 again to get another customer service rep. I've heard of others who had to chat or call three different times. If your chat or call is not going anywhere, say thank you and end your chat or call, and try again.

Again you can get this credit before your next bill arrives, or if you already have it on your monthly bill, they will give you the credit including the tax right then and there.

Keep trying. The CSRs are all reading the same script. I did this for all of my Apple and Samsung cell phones that I just upgraded.

Here are 28 pages of waived upgrade fees from another site:

Get serious and let them know the phone is still in the return period and you know how to get a Straight Talk SIM for free with a $45/month service plan.

I really hope none of you get me if calling Customer Service.

    Haha, just kidding.

Oh, and too the person where the reps are saying you have to go to a special department to see if they can adjust...just telling you right now you're going to need a lot of luck to get the upgrade fee waived.

Appreciate the tip. I just chatted with customer service and they removed two upgrade fees. I told them that I had the opportunity to move on and that I didn't find it fair or good customer service to charge an existing customer who could have gone elsewhere $36 per upgrade to stay. They said they could offer me a one time fee removal. Here is their quote:

"I am able to provide you with a one time courtesy credit for the charges. However, they are standard one time charges and cannot be credited in the future, I do apologize. Please allow me another moment to do that for you."
