Phone Emailing Hundreds of Old Meeting Requests!!!!!

I was working on my computer when I noticed my outlook inbox was getting dozens of failed message replies from meetings that had been sent over the past year. I had to put my phone in airplane mode to stop the barrage and delete the email account from my phone. Any ideas about what setting could be causing or how to prevent that from happening again? It was a MS Exchange account. Sorry if that's not enough information. Please let me know any suggestions, thanks!
