gMail posts to Notifications rather than INBOX

I've just bought an S3 (after 6 years with BlackBerry) and am having a problem with my gMail account. The man at AT&T who set up the device established my gMail account but did not set up a discrete gMail email account (there is not one showing in the Accounts area - only the gMail sync). All my gMail posts to the Notification area and does not show up in my email.

Anyone know what I can do to fix that?
