The phone that I've been using for the last couple of years has died and I'm finding myself back on the AT&T Galaxy S3 for the time being while I figure out what to do. It's been almost 2 years since I've used the phone. It's still on Android 4.1.2. I remember that I intentionally did not upgrade, due to multiple problems with the next release, which included KNOX. I see now that the S3 has had several subsequent updates to Android. I'm wondering if I should allow the automatic software update now. I've updated all the apps on the phone (I've uninstalled all but the most crucial ones) however, I'm running into a lot of crashes and freezes. The battery seems to be draining pretty quickly, despite there being very few running processes. I want to try to use this phone for a couple of months. Would it be best to update to the latest Samsung software and firmware at this point? I should probably add that I'm using the AT&T version on T-Mobile.

    Thanks!

I would do the update. Haven't seen many complaints about S3 updates, but then again, that might be due to its age. If the phone is misbehaving as it is right now, you probably don't have much to lose.

But I also wonder if you'll be able to update, since it's usually the carrier that will push the specific update over the air. Since you have an AT&T version, you may have to get it onto the AT&T network to get the update. Kies might work, regardless of the carrier.

If kies or ota updates don't work. You can go to any bestbuy that had a Samsung experience center and ask them to update your s3. It's free no charge. I did this last month to have the att s3 updated to KitKat

I've been sitting at 4.1.1 because I rooted my phone and can't do OTA updates.

Should I flash with odin to 4.4.2? I've read there are major problems with the 4.3 update, and the 4.4.2 update was supposed to fix that but they fix but also create NEW problems for people on the Galaxy S3, Note II, Note III.
