Unread email count like iphone

I'm an iPhone convert and I'm just loving my android experience. I have an HTC inspire 4g. The question I have is, I use the native email app and have setup my exchange account. When an email arrives it shows me the count, but after I open the application, the unread count clears and it's kind of annoying as I really can't track how many are still left. The messages are still unopened, shoudn't the count still remain?

Is there way to achieve this?

Look for an Unread Gmail widget in the market.

Your saying you use both email applications? Native Email App and GMail App?

You can turn off either notification in their respective settings if this annoys you.

Thanks for your responses. Gmail unread count only applies to gmail account. I need something that retains the unread count for exchange accounts.
