Notifications

Some notifications/reminders questions :

1. Is there some way (maybe an app?) that can make notifications appear in the main screen, like a pop-up Window? I used to do this in my old Blackberry Curve. On the Android phones, notifications appear in the notification bar at the top of the screen. Sometimes I miss an important call, or calendar event because notifications are small and appear at the top (which sometimes in a hurry I might not noticed them).
2. My calendar, e-mail, and other notifications are just sounding, phone is not vibrating, even though vibration and sound are enabled (Normal profile). The only vibration I am getting is when I receive a phone call.
