LED notification - is this normal?

I saw that the LED notification blinks when I received an email, while the Note 2 is off (sleep). Yes, that's what I set it up it for.
As soon as I hit the power button to wake it up, the LED stopped. Is this how it's supposed to behave?

Mine does the same, as you see on your lock screen that you have a message that you can read or dismiss.

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it. I use PIN lock to lock the screen and I did not see any messages on that screen?
