get notification of voice mail to main screen

How can I get notification onto my main screen for voicemail like a real phone (meaning any phone besides the s4)?
I have spent an hour with the t mobile tech, no help.
I have seen lots of blogs complaining about it, but no solution.
tried visual voicemail, but they want an extra 3.99 per month for somthing that no phone should not have on their "basic" features.
I never know I have voicemail unless I poll it.

Missed Call+ (Alarm) will put a widget on your screen if you missed a call, but not if VM picked it up (I don't think). It's a free app, so try it and see what happens if you let a call go to VM - it might consider it a missed call and let you know. (It's been a while since I had it installed, since I use Google Voice, so I get emails of VMs and a badge on my email app when there's an unread email, so I don't need one to tell me that I have a VM that I already have an email about.)
