So, I'm currently using a HTC One M8. When Android L is released I'm thinking about going back to my Nexus 5 for a little bit. Can I reactivate my old SIM card I used with my Nexus or do I have to go out and buy a new one or buy an adapter for nano to micro? Thanks.

1. i think T-Mob terminates SIM cards after a period of inactivity and they are no longer able to be reactivated. not sure how long.
2. be careful with the SIM card adapter. i've read horror stories of these getting stuck and damaging phones -
a. don't go cheap on an adapter.
b. never insert an empty adapter into the tray.

good luck.

A SIM adapter properly used is probably fine, but seriously, trust Gekko on 2b: I made that mistake once and wrecked my Nexus S.

Whether you can "reactivate" a SIM depends on when it was last used and how it was deactivated. If the number was transferred, it's dead. If your service on it just lapsed, it's a matter of how long it's been. T-Mobile only holds the number for you for a limited time, then they assign it to someone else. Once it's reassigned, the SIM is dead.
