How to enable Chinese input in texts. (Chinese app keyboards send question marks to receiver.)

I use Chinese to communicate with my parents. I tried downloading a couple Chinese keyboard apps. Works fine on my phone, but when the person receives my text, they are all "question marks" that appear like "?????"

I looked through Settings>Language and Inputs>Languages and there is no Chinese. What should I do in this situation?

Buy other cell phones, such as HTC, iphone.....
