where is the rest of my text?

after texting back and forth for a time, the top of my text stream gets deleted (i think).

how can i stop this from happening in the future?
how can i find what's been apparently deleted?

Are messages in the conversation being deleted? It might be set up to automatically delete older messages. I have my conversations to max out at 500 messages before it starts to delete the older messages. Check your Messaging settings.

i couldn't find settings for Messaging through the overall "Settings" icon nor could i find any settings while i was looking at a specific text/message. so, your response helped me know there was a settings selection somewhere.

turns out you have to NOT be viewing a specific text, but must select the pop-up menu on the lower left while viewing the Messaging list of ALL texts. then, at the bottom of the list is the "Settings" selection for this issue.

as you did, i set Text Message Limit to 500 and Multimedia Message Limit to 500.

Do what Mentle said and turn off the message delete. I bet that's what the issue is .
