THIS IS CRAZY!!! Okay so I went to bestbuy.com/xoom and at the bottom of the page it had the motorola xoom and the price. The price there was $1,199.99!! This is crazy. I really hope this is an error its something because nobody is going to want to pay that much. Motorola - XOOM Tablet / NVIDIA Tegra Processor / 10.1" Display / 1GB Memory / 32GB Hard Drive - Licorice - 990000745 - Best Buy Well looks like they took down their page.

Ya I checked the regular site and it shows the same thing. But its not uncommon for Best Buy to put place holder prices in before its released. Better to put a high price in now and lower it later than vice versa.

It look's like the pricing on the Xoom is a strategy to milk consumers' tax return money from their bank accounts LOL.

This is quickly turning into a case study in how not to launch a product:
  • Leak specs of a device months in advance to get tech blog nerds excited
  • Demo device (well, videos running on the device) and still somehow manage to win Best in Show at CES
  • Announce only one version of device on one carrier partner, with a retail exclusive for a big-box electronics store with a lousy reputation for gouging its customers
  • Allow pricing details to leak with no response from either device maker or carrier partner. Let tech blogs and fanboys go apes--t over perceived high pricing
  • Allow further pricing details to leak indicating that not only was the high price correct, but that at least a one-month cellular data purchase will be required to "activate" core functionality on the device
  • Still no response from either device maker or carrier partner
  • Exclusive retail launch partner allows pre-order detail to go live on its website, with a pre-order price a full $400 higher than the previous price, which was generally thought to be $100-$200 too high, further enraging tech blogs and fanboys

I was still willing to pre-order at $799 but this is beyond ridiculous. Granted, there's the possibility someone at BB messed up (intentionally or otherwise), or it's another case of VZW/BB being ridiculously greedy, or it's some ridiculous marketing ploy to show a high price, then drop it back to what everyone was expecting. I'm now fully on board with the idea that Moto has botched this launch. No one will take this device seriously at $1199, except maybe the same people who buy Vertu phones. And this is Moto's fault - you need to keep a leash on your partners lest they screw things up. I despise Apple, but this is one thing they do exceptionally well: announce a product with pricing, then have it available for sale or pre-order virtually immediately, and ship it. Companies barely back from the dead can't afford missteps like this. There will be too many other options in the Android tablet space too quickly. Moto has succeeded at one thing - it's turned the Xoom into a punchline before it's even launched.

I think they're playing games. I'll just wait until there is something official. The Samsung Galaxy tab 2 is looking good.

1. This is a best buy leak. It has NOTHING to do with motorola or Verizon. In fact, verizon did respond to this already. They said Best Buy sets their own pricing.

2. This IS a placeholder. unless motorola, Google, and Verizon are looking at throwing away millions in development money, the price will not be over a grand. As other's have mentioned, Best buy likes making crazy placeholders.

3. most of you were flipping out when Best buy "confirmed" the price was 799, why do you just accept that this is the new confirmed price?

4. Verizon and Motorola haven't released official pricing information yet because they haven't officially announced a RELEASE date yet. They're not responding to this tripe because even if they did, most of the people who care about this device (A minority of potential users) won't care and will jump at the next rumor as soon as it "leaks."

5. If anything, this is a case study in how everyone should calm down and stop jumping over every rumor and treating it like fact. This isn't a retail exclusive with best buy first of all (they're just the big box to get it at launch, other stores will have it, indirects most likely on launch day).

Please, someone explain to me how the price of something can jump by over 50% and ANYONE consider it a real price? Think people.

There has been no announcement on price nor release date, so this is not a price jump. It is just another tale in the story of the Xoom information not being controlled by Motorola.

And what could motorola do? Deny Best buy their products? They're too big of a market to do that.

This is BEST BUY doing what they do best, crapping all over common sense and having two hands that don't speak to one another.

I KNOW there is no official release date. But we're comparing ONE best buy leak (that a ton of people believed) and another one (that people are freaking out about now).

If the SAME company jumps the price 50% within a few days, that should throw up a red flag. If people can't apply common sense to their reasoning, they should do themselves a favor and just not read tech sites. they'll stress themselves out.

Just put out an official announcement on the MSRP. Then they stop all the speculation by best buy leaks etc.

No they wouldn't. It would calm people until the NEXT leak came out.

The only way to stop people from freaking out over BS rumors like this is to get people to use a little common sense, which they won't.

They put out an official MSRP then people flip out over the "required" activation, which isn't required.

Or they're freak out and say the 4G upgrade will be $X, and then $X+500, etc.

People are so desperate to find stuff out before it's announced that they'll believe ANYTHING.

Those things may all be true, but you can't un-ring a bell. The perception is out there that Moto is twiddling its thumbs while BB and VZW put this info out there. Good luck explaining BB's placeholder practices while the BB site is sitting there with that price. When BB finally gets around to updating it days from now, it will be too late. You're right that people get too wrapped in this stuff and the rumor-driven tech blogs (like this one) are part of the issue, but that's not going to change. This whole thing makes Moto look stupid, regardless of whether it sets pricing or not.

I disagree. But maybe you associate with a differant type of person. For me an official announcement would trump rumors and leaks.

The only way to stop people from freaking out over BS rumors like this is to get people to use a little common sense, which they won't.
I don't see a lot of freaking out going on. I read a lot of discussion and people making it clear that "if" said rumor is true then explaining how they would react.

They put out an official MSRP then people flip out over the "required" activation, which isn't required.

Or they're freak out and say the 4G upgrade will be $X, and then $X+500, etc.
So your idea is no information is better then a little. I can understand that, not how I would do things. But I also would probably have done a better job of controlling the spin on this thing.

They have been clear that you will need to upgrade to 4G when it is available, which was a good move.

To say that the price wil lbe $X plus required 1 time activation and a future 4G upgrade if you choose to be released by Y date, would have been a good move.

I disagree with letting your product launch being taken over by rumors and leaks.

People are so desperate to find stuff out before it's announced that they'll believe ANYTHING.
That's not true. They will discuss anything, but don't assume they believe it just because they are talking about it.

I already replied to you on the article, but to sum it up: You're making the common mistake online of taking online sites too seriously.

A MAJORITY of consumers don't read these sites. Of those that do, a Majority of those consumers actually apply rational thought. only an extreme minority are idiots but unfortunately, that minority is also more likely than any other group to feel the urge to comment and express their outrage.

Yes, Android Central posted on this rumor, if for no other reason than to stop people from (most likely) flooding their inbox. You'll notice that in the TITLE of the post as well as in the body they mentioned that this was most likely not the price, and they mentioned the placeholder issue. They're (so far) the ONLY blog to make this distinction.

Reporting on rumors isn't an issue. Treating them as fact is.

Discussing rumors on a tech blog isn't an issue. Getting all bent out of shape over people doing it is.
