Android Central Question

10-03-2017: Android Google Maps red and white "Compass Rose", which used to be in the upper right-hand corner of the phone screen, has disappeared after their latest "update". Instead, now there is some useless icon to navigate between Satellite and Terrain (which, heretofore, has always been perfectly accessible in the Menu (upper left-hand corner). There used to be a selection under Settings in this Menu to manage options for this Compass Rose, but it's not even there anymore. I swear, it's so exasperating. And it's not just Google Maps. It's a Google Play pandemic!! Every other day, it's an update; another "bug fix" for the previous "bug fix" -- but the more "bugs" the developers "fix", and the more they tinker with perfectly functional apps, the worse they screw them up; making them more redundant and user-UNFRIENDLY with every "tweak"!! Whatever happened to "If it ain't broke, don't f**k with it"??!!?? Could I please just get my Compass Rose back?? THAT'S what I need on my screen; not some daffy, redundant icon for what already exists right under my nose!!

Welcome to Android Central! What version of Google Maps do you have? I have 9.63.0 on my Pixel XL, and I see the compass icon during navigation.

My version is 9.62.0 and the compass needle is missing. In previous versions it would appear if the map was rotated, but now it no longer appears, even after rotating. I prefer the map to always be in "North up" mode, so this is frustrating. I figured out how to get the map back to North up, though, by tapping the "my location" icon multiple times (in the bottom right corner, above the blue navigation dot). It doesn't restore the needle, and the first tap will shift the map to include your current location, which may be inconvenient, but the third tap set the orientation to the default "North up" (the second tap set the mode to a tilted view).

I have version 9.63.1 and I can rotate it with the icon that is circled above. When I push that the red North thing appears for a few seconds then disappears. They might be testing the use of that icon over the former one.

It also stays during navigation.
