1st time flashing a custom rom on my note 2

im using TWRP, i put the app and GAPPS on my sd card, but when i boot into recovery, im not seeing the files. when i plug phone into computer and look on SD card they are there

should i be putting the files on the phone and not on sd card?

disregard, i figured it out. i wasnt selecting the external sd card
