i understand that you can go from the 2.1 rooted firmware to the 2.1 leaked firmware.... but can you do it the other way around? I have the leaked firmware and want it rooted. is it possible.

No, no, and no. All Leaked 2.1 people are stuck. Plain and simple. this I believe is mentioned in all threads related to the Root install process.
