so, is there an EASY way to Root 2.1 yet? like with 2.0.1-I could run DMUpdater, and it does EVERYTHING for me. Any chance of seeing something like that for 2.1?

Nope not yet. Your going to have to go back to 2.0,1 in order to root.

gah. im really trying to avoid that. lol. hopefully DMUpdater or ROM Manager will be updated with that ability

just flash sprecovery using sbf really easy to do. i had to load windows on my mac to do it but got tired of waiting.

The problem with that is rom manager never had the ability to root the Droid so I really don't think koushe will add it. Second, DMU rooted the Droid with a pre-existing way of rooting. Seeing as there is no way to directly root the 2.1 update currently I doubt it will be added anytime soon. If you want to root then I would just follow the tutorials that show you how to go back to 2.0.1 then root. There really isn't any other way at this point. Good luck though.

me too. flashing the sbf was super easy, and only took a couple minutes following the clear, simple instructions. after that, copying over an update.zip to the sd card, booting to recovery, and hitting install was was one of the easiest things ever. after going from stock 2.1 to JRummy Remix ROM, 800mhz overclock, wifi tether, and all the other goodies, i dont see myself going back anytime soon. even when 2.2 drops, all the will mean for me is better roms with new features.

Stock is good. Root is awesome.

You make this sound so easy. There are no links. Idk where to find various ROMs, update.zip files??? Can someone pls make this a tad easier. This whole rooting thing is interesting and I wanna try a HTC Sense ROM on my Droid but sounds hard as hades to accomplish.

i had it rooted on the 2.0.1 originally....

i take it there is no way to do this on a Mac though right? Gonna have to bust out the old HP?

so not to Double Post, if I use DM Updater, and install the file it downloads / has me install (the update.zip) file, will that take me back to Stock 2.0.1 so I can install JRummy? (wifi tethering sounds AWESOME)

I got the first part but when i get to the point to flash the rom it wont work. I downloaded Ultimate droid and renamed it to update.zip and nothing happened. I downloaded jrummys blue and renamed it to update.zip and nothing happened. I see superuser premissions in my list of installed apps but idk what else to do.

I did it again and it says no such file or directory. Installation aborted.

I have a question: I currently am rooted, oc at 800mhz and don't have a rom. I do have Rom Manager but I haven't downloaed a rom because I'm afraid I might have to enter all my info again and delete all of my data (that was issue 1). The other thing (issue 2) is that last time I installed a rom I suddenly lost my root access and couldn't over clock. In short (too late?) how can I install a rom without loosing all of my data and account info and apps, and how to do it while keeping root access and be able to overclock?

Thanks

Someone with more knowledge correct me if im wrong or theres an easier way. Your contacts etc. should be backed up to googles servers so long as you checked the options.

I use titanium backup to backup all my apps before I flash a new rom. Has worked well for me.

I have never lost my root when flashing a new rom. If you have the superuser ninja still in your apps you should still be rooted. You might have to install a new kernel if you can't overclock as not all kernels are compatible with all roms. You can get a new kernel in rom manager. Maybe someone else can help you more with this question.

Well you can be on a non rooted Rom with the Su app really won't do any good without any of the binaries. But titanium is good and true not all kernels are compatible with everything though work is being made with koush's new update zip format.
And Google backs up your apps and contacts etc just sign into your Google account. The apps you may have to go to your downloads section un the market to see

Thanks guys. I have a google and 2 yahoo accounts that I hate having to log on plus the facebook, pandora and slacker radio accounts is annoying. The first time I flashed a rom (earlier today) i had superuser ninja before the rom but after the rom it was missing and then setcpu no longer allowed me to do anything saying I didn't have access when i did before the rom. I re-did everthing again from scratch getting root access first and this time, rather than flashing a rom, I just downloaded the kernel I needed so I am overclocked but I'm afraid of flashing a rom in fear of the same thing happening again and having to start all over again.

I forgot to mention (and probably the reason why I lost my root). When I installed the rom I did not wipe date and cache so I retained all from my phone but the root was gone. May be that's what did it?

This worked and finally I am Rooted and Overclocked at 1Ghz. It took some tweeking but this is actually the most simple and easy way that I have found to do this "fearful" rooting process. Very detailed! Thanks! Oh and just a heads up, you may need to download the JRummys MODs using Firefox! Android ROCKS!!
you dont have to downgrade anymore you can just flash sprecovery to stock 2.1 and install a custom rom with sprecovery which will give you root Video: Flashing SPRecovery SBF to Stock 2.1 | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog then when your done with that do this Video: Installing a Custom ROM Using SPRecovery | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog THEN YOUR ROOTED AND ENJOY!!!!
