should I upgrade to 2.2
AT & T just sent me an email suggesting that its "available" however after all the things I have read here, it appears that 2.2. might not be a good thing.
what are the pro's & cons?
thanks:cool:

Well if you want to keep your phone stock *i.e. No Root, Sideloading disabled*, then I would say yes as the 2.2 is better then 2.1. Now if you want to do all of the above, then I say go with a custom rom like Phoenix Ultimate or Cognition. Way better then the samsung froyo rom..

I have NO idea what anything you says means so maybe I should stick with 2.1?

If you have even a smidgin of tech experience then you need to upgrade. If you're completely without any tech experience I would still upgrade, but get some help with the process..but its very easy and will make your phone better. For one thing many apps are compatible with 2.2 and up now, so you are limiting your phone's ability to even use useful apps..quick example would be skype

I definitely recommend going to 2.2. I did it for the tethering built in as well as the ability to use skype chat on my phone which is the only way I can get a hold of some people easily.

However I tried to load Cognition and followed some instructions to the T on it, however the loading of the Cognition just wouldn't go through. however I was happy enough with what I have and I use a different loader than my stock Touch Wiz crapola and the experience is great now. I felt like I got a new faster more powerful phone.

Especially since my Titanium backup didn't quite restore properly and so I lost most of my data. Make sure to put your contact numbers up in your Gmail contacts, back up anything that you don't want to lose, because for all intents and purposes, it's a brand new phone.

I found myself using Advanced Task Manager every hour on 2.1, but on 2.2 I never even installed the app. It seems to manage memory and background programs way more efficiently.

Even if you don't understand what rooting and such is I still suggest upgrading your phone to 2.2. 2.2 provides and upgrade in overall performance and adds things like flash and tethering support.

If your not sure how to upgrade follow this thread it should help.http://forum.androidcentral.com/t-captivate/62944-official-froyo-update-instructions-samsung-captivate-its-here.html

I also recommend learning a little about rooting and custom roms I believe they can really enhance your experience and let you get the most out of what is actually a pretty impressive piece of hardware. http://forum.androidcentral.com/t-captivate-rooting-roms-hacks/

Its really not a hard process to upgrade to 2.2, the instructions that Samsung posted on their website are very clear and are easy to follow. I upgraded my phone in less than 20 minutes and that's coming from no previous knowledge on how to do anything on a phone. All I can say though is that even with the upgrade, while it is a lot better than 2.1, it still lagged a bit and wasn't that much better in my opinion (bloatware, so thats AT&Ts fault). Gingerbread is so much better than 2.2 though :p

I would upgrade

I am rooted but do not flash. I have enjoyed the captivate more with 2.2 than with 2.1. In fact, I had the Atrix already bought but did not open it. I upgraded the captivate to sell it and liked it so much more that the "upgrade" to the Atrix did not seem worth it. I took the Atrix back.

If there's one thing I've learned it's that the grass is always greener...the Captivate is a helluva device, and for me I have no fever at the moment for anything else. Maybe the S2 when it comes out..but not a can't wait kinda thing
