2.3.4 root help

Hello, I am new here as well to all this root stuff. I consider myself decently tech kitterate but I am having some major problems that I cant seem to find anywhere. Rooting apparently has nothing to do with your version but with your phone as well? I have tried Superoneclick first which says GG- Enjoy! and then restarting device..(which never happens), That didnt work so I got Gingerbreak...That said it was running for 15 minutes so I cancelled it.. I know it cant take that long...Then I went with Z4root and that was even worse. Ran for 5-10 seconds and sent me back to my home page. If I tried to get into any app after that it was a white screen. Had to restart phone. I tried temp and permi root on there...Is there a way to do this and I am just completely missing something obveous?
