I've had my original Motorola triumph before it came out. I've had to exchange that 3 different times. First one, the GPS wouldn't lock at all, second phone, the ear piece would buzz and you couldn't hear, the third one(Current one), the GPS will lock, but it takes 8-10 minutes. I called virgin mobile and they finally sent me a brand new phone. Now, my original triumph had Software version 38 on it, but this new one has 39 on it. I've been testing them out side by side. The 38, the screen is much MUCH more blue than the 39 one. The GPS on 39 locks instantly, however the 38 does not. The one thing about the new one though is that side by side, version 38 for some reason, get's -90 dbm, where as version 39 gets -107? That's horrible compared to what I'm used to. It's jumping all over the place. Is it the software doing this, or is it an actual hardware/antenna problem. I'm going to nandroid backup version 39, and restore it to my other phone, see if it fixes issues. Then we'll know if it's an actual problem with the phone itself or not. I'll report back on what I find.

Edit: Oh, one more thing. V39 doesn't install drivers, nor does it have a "Mobile" partition like 38 does when you plug it into a computer.

as much as i hope they actually upgraded the software to fix some of the known problems, i have my doubts...

it seemed to be pure luck if you get a working phone or not. i got one with bunch of the problems, especially GPS, just like you have described. But at the same time there were others adamantly saying they had ZERO problems with theirs?

as for signal level. Remember an inactive phone might show lower dbm value than activated phone. A phone that is actively transmitting will also boost it?s antenna thereby showing better numbers. As for the usb driver and virtual cdrom. I noticed they made it so that if the phone was not activated it would not show the device or virtual cdrom when plugged into the computer via usb. So much of the differences you noticed could be explained by the differences between an activated and unactivated phone? I could be very well be wrong of course. they could have made an all new ?better? batch already, although I would be really surprised if they did so this fast.

The two different revisions had been reported elsewhere as well, but OP seemed to be the only one who had both version and were able to do a side-by-side comparison. Thank you for doing that. And please let us know if you discover any other objective differences between the two.

Also, I?d be interested to find out if there?s any difference between the two phones on their ?time without signals? stat (under settings-> about-> battery usage-> cell standby). You can only compare them if both phones were activated of course. The Triumph I had always showed 80%+ TWS. It apparently was the same bug OV had (and fixed by later revision and custom rom.)

Yeah, I was thinking that the signal could be less because it's not activated, so I'll have to try that too. Time without a signal, even though one isnt activated on the network is still 50% on both phones. Still testing though!

Edit: Signal on version 38 phone is still better, even though 39 is now activated. Weird. I guess I'll be okay with that. -94(v38) -100(v39)

I have now gone through three different Triumph's, (I might be a masochist) and each of them had their own unique flaws. Apart from that, I like this phone enough to keep trying.

My first and second phone had the power button and volume button almost completely flush with the side of the case. My third one actually pops the button outwards a bit and has a good button feel to them. The first two phones buttons did not really feel like buttons either; they were more like pressing solid plastic.

My second phone had an insane color temperature problem. The screen was very blue compared to my first and third Triumph's I had. The second phone made yellow look green and white just a tinge off regular blue. Additionally, the second phone with the color temperature problem had the flickering screen problem. My first and third Triumph's did not have flickering screen or major color temperature problem. I think this is down to having multiple suppliers for the screen on the Triumph.

Responsiveness as a whole is the same throughout all three Triumph's with random touches not registering.

GPS ability of the first and second Triumph's I had were absolutely terrible and were pretty much useless as a navigator. My third Triumph can actually get a decent signal outdoors with a reasonable time to find my location. It still isn't quite as good as my old Optimus V, but I now find it acceptable.

My first and third Triumph's had a camera that would click as it would auto-focus, and click again once I exited the camera program. My second Triumph had no clicking noises coming out of it. However, the second and third Triumph have a yellow blob in the middle of the pictures they take.

Signal levels for all three Triumph's I had are all about the same, and all of them exhibit the same problem where if GPS gets activated the cellular signal levels get affected quite badly. All three were not nearly as good as my old Optimus V.

I just find the phones were not made with much care or testing as they were produced. My current example is the best one yet, but still has a clicking camera (Still auto-focuses, so no problem really) and a screen that is unevenly lit. This is in addition to the normal problems all other Triumph's have with signal and software bugs. I like this third one enough to keep as long as nothing else breaks.

All three phones I had ran the 1010_2_038 software version with Kernel Apps_2.6.32.9-perf and baseband PR5.

On mine, it will hold a bar of 3G, then suddenly, its drops to no service, then to 1 bar of 1x, then I cant get a GPS lock! i hope this and tethering gets fixed with a new ROM....

I had not noticed this on my phone but the exact problem had been reported elsewhere. Since it?s pretty unlikely that GPS and Wireless signals would somehow interfere with either other, I could only assume this was due to a broken driver or hardware ?.

Have you tried this test with the phone plugged into a charger? it?d be interesting to see if this has anything to do with internal power management? it wouldn?t be the first phone to have these types of problems.

FYI, the problems I experienced on the T, especially when it comes to GPS, are identical to what Liquidplacidity and hatmaker reported. The differences are that I did not have the will to try three different units. :)

I considered an exchange but the BB I got the phone from did not have any more in stock. However, he did show me 3 other returned phones in a drawer. He said so far they have only gotten 10 phones at that store, counting mine, 4 had been returned for various reasons.

It?s hard to tell what the overall return rates from such a small sample size but I hope it?s high enough to get VM?s attention.

I am a glutton for self punishment so all this testing and return swapping excites me. I am willing to accept flaws when Best Buy Mobile is selling all of the phones for 30% off. This latest one seems OK enough to keep, but I can accept the weaker signal and software bugs for the cool price of $210. I would be much less friendly about the phone if it cost $300. I enjoy the larger screen and processing power, and at least with my third example of the Triumph I have finally found one that isn't as lemon-ish. I could regret my decision to keep this phone as it may explode from lack of testing at the factory, but I figure this will only last about 1-1.5 years at best before I get a replacement.

I just remember when I first posted my thoughts about the Triumph being buggy people accused me of being biased/hateful. I'm happy to see most people have recognized there are some serious issues with this phone. Hopefully with some ROM work and luck with hardware most of it can be resolved. I like my current Triumph enough to keep it, but I would never pay full price because of the issues this phone has.

i had the same experiences with the fanboy responses. I tried (although not always successfully) to ignore them. posts like ?the Triumph has a great gps, you just don?t know how turn on the super secret ?use wireless network? option? are the ones that really get me. :)

I have no doubt the price will come down a bit if I am just willing to keep the OV for a bit longer. But frankly, I am perfectly willing to pay the $270+tax again right now if only I could ensure a working unit?

Not a single issue with my MT. I prefer the feel of the Olympus V, but the volume on the V is too low and the keys are too small.
