I was told i originally posted this in the wrong area...

Hello Everyone! I have been reading for a lont time, but just recently joined...this is my first post (be gentle..)

I have a question about rooting my Droid Bionic...since the OTA is coming out next month, would it be wise to wait until after the update to root my phone?

When the update comes out, Will i be able to unroot, accept the OTA update, and then re-root my phone? I read somewhere that if i accept the OTA update while rooted, that it might brick my phone.

My plan at the moment is to root the phone, and pay for Titanium Backup to freeze unwanted bloatware. I am going to wait to flash ROMs until after the update comes out.

Thanks for all of your advice on these forums, you are really helping us newbies out! Be easy..

If you wait until the OTA comes out there is no guarantee that you will be able to root at all, because so far they are unable to root it directly. What you need to do is root now, then using Root Explorer (market) you follow these instructions (credit goes to P3droid / XDA website, I am just copy/pasting the important part for your ease):

go to /system/bin/open in text editor - mount_ext3.sh add the following lines to the very bottom (place 2 lines between the last line and the first line of the script)

chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/xbin/su
chmod 4755 /system/app/Superuser.apk

Entered exactly as you see it above. This is the ForeverRoot procedure. Reboot your phone after completing, and then go back into the file just to double-check that the lines saved correctly - RECOMMENDED :)

Now you can apply the OTA update and still have root when you're done. Fortunately you don't have to wait for Verizon to give it to you... But you must have your phone "stock"... none of the bloatware removed or frozen, or the update will not be given to you.

For instructions on that, see here:
*Bootloader Unlock Research* Cheesecake Clarification - xda-developers

Start under where it says in big happy letters: "Now an app does it all for you. Imagine that."
Around step 6-7 or so you'll be notified that the update 5.5.893...blah blah was found. Go ahead and let it download and install. After finished, check it out.. you should be running 5.5.893 with the updated kernal and radio files, and you should still have Superuser and root access on your phone.

Know what you're doing, read through it a couple times, and you will not have any problems. If you screw something up, you can go here and there are fixes:

I appreciate the info man..i will definately root now that you have pointed this out...

Do you recommend Titanium Backup for freezing apps, or just go through Root Explorer??

I use both TI and Root explorer. Titanium Backup is awesome for freezing and defrosting bloat (if you stay on 893 stock you will have this). As previously mentioned r3Blurr3d 2.0 strips most of this stuff on its own. I highly recommend Root Explorer. I can't say enough good things about it.
