2 sensors under the speaker

If you hold your phone in just the right light you will see that there are 2 holes (sensors?) beneath the glass under the left side of the speaker next to the hTC logo They are about the size of the front facing camera. They appear to be proximity sensors (I tested by making a call and covering them with my thumb and the screen turns off and then back on when I uncover them) but if this is the case why are there 2?

^^ Yes, the light sensor is the second one on the left side of the phone.

It's the proximity sensor that is located under the notification light.
