3 Questions About Froyo

Recently rooted DInc here. Rooted solely to use root-only apps and overclock my processor. Still running stock 2.1 ROM. 3 questions about the upcoming update.

1. Will my phone receive the OTA update even though I'm rooted?

2. I know that the official Froyo update is slated to break root. But what does that mean for my overclocked 1.15 Ghz Hydra Kernel? Will I have to reflash the stock kernel beforehand to avoid issue?

3. I also realize that manually updating wipes all data. Do the OTA updates also wipe data? And if so, what is the most efficient (non-root) method of backing up and restoring?

Thanks in advance.

1. If you are just simply rooted then yes you will. If you are running a custom ROM then you most likely you will not (depends on the ROM and whether or not OTAcerts was removed)

2. I am not sure if it will break root or just that we will need to find a new way to root. As for your kernel, if you want the stock 2.2 Froyo update you will need to revert back to stock 2.1 update 1 and your custom kernel will go with it.

3. OTA updates DO NOT wipe data. Some good methods for backing up your settings apops etc are titanium backup and mybackup pro. Both apps are great but there may be more apps out there to help with this.

EDIT: I am new to the inc but have been rooting and flashing custom ROMS with my MOTO Droid as soon as rooting began for the phone so some mentioning of the "otacerts" file may be only a Moto Droid thing...but I think it is the same concept

so i was thinking of rooting my phone too, but figured i would wait since the incredible 2.2 update is coming around soon. but you're saying if i root and that's all, OTA update should come in fine? i want to root just for the wireless tether app and flashlight app that uses the LED lights.

If anyone is thinking of keeping their root I'm sure once the official OTA is release we will have custom Roms made from the official 2.2 that will be just as good. I cannot give up root for any update, I like all the extra things you can do with root.

1. Has to do with whether you have clockwork recovery installed. If you do, not OTA for you! Regarding the previous otacerts comment, only a fool would delete those and I wouldn't use a rom where it has been deleted.
2. An OTA would delete any custom kernel and replace with its own.
3. Yes SOME OTAs will nuke your data. They will warn you beforehand.
