i bought a 32g sd card for my evo... copied over files and installed in phone.. now some of the widgets aren't there and some of the videos(movies) wont play, but they are there.. and the best for last, not all of the music was on so i began to copy from laptop and after a few minutes phone said sd card removed and to please install...
Thank you for your time, Dan

Pull it, put it back in the phone and reformat it using the phone. Then drag and drop all the files you want onto it using your USB cord. It has something to do with the FAT (File Allocation Table) and the way it is written on a computer versus the phone. You have to have the phone format the card for NTFS instead of FAT. FAT will only recognize 4GB on an SD card, while NTFS will recognize it as 32GB. You could do it on your computer, but it is easier if you let the phone do it since it probably came with an MBR partition initially, but when you formatted it, it changed to FAT16, which is default for an SD card formatted on a computer. FAT32 and NTFS are the versions since Win98 when larger hard drives came out for puters. In a nutshell, let the phone do it and it will write to NTFS or MBR...

I prefer to use the official SD card formatting program.
SD Formatter 3.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC - SD Association

The phone shouldn't format to NTFS because that is a Microsoft standard and even though Windows can format the card to NTFS, the standard for SD cards is FAT (FAT16) for SD cards 4GB and under and FAT32 for cards larger than 4GB.

I concur with the last part, but once the MBR partition was erased and FAT16 or 32 was used, the Linux Kernel was looking for an MBR partition. It has to have a partition. I'll bet your device partitions it as MBR and sets the file system as FAT32 or NTFS if it's bigger than 4GB so the computer can still read it. http://cdn.energymicro.com/dl/an/pdf/an0030_efm32_fat_on_sd_card.pdf (Drop down to para 4.3)

Most SD cards are sold pre-formatted with a FAT file system on top of an MBR partition scheme as per the above table. The popularity of this file system allows the card to be accessed on virtually any host device with an SD reader. (That is the last paragraph in the "Introduction" part of link) Linux can read NTFS, but I'm not sure about our phones.

I'm still looking for an actual answer...Anyway, my phone recognized my 32GB card when I threw it in because I didn't format it with a computer first. I did with my phone though and it worked just fine.

so there are still issues.. used computer to put pix and videos on card but in phone it shows nothing, when i try to make a video or use camara i get the message"unable to save file to sd card due to innsuficiant file permissions... any ideas?

Your card might be toasted in few spots...Hate to say it. Make sure it's unlocked, and give it another shot. You can only format and erase them so many times and it's a coin toss every time to tell you the truth. I try not to format mine, but, I have once in 4 months. If it's not very old take it back and tell them it ain't working...as it's not. Get a new one and just put it in the phone this time...lol It will work. then hook up your USB and drag and drop everything to your phone.
