I have both installed. Although I'm still not sure why I need the Motorola Connect app....

I know that you can't have the date on the stock face without the connect app. I guess I will re install the connect app as I like the date on the face.

Motorola connect also allows you to send texts from your phone while using your laptop, PC or chrome book from a Chrome browser extension. Just install the Motorola Connect app on your phone then install the extension in the Chrome Web browser. I use this all the time, it works great.

I have installed Android Wear and Motorola Connect on my Nexus 6. I dunno what is different but I use often Motorola Connect to manage Moto 360.
