3g but no standard voice or messaging

While I was in maryland camping at gren ridge national park I had a weak signal but I could see two bars. My 3g worked, I could connect to the internet, but I could not make calls or send messages. Two other people I was with who had verizon dumb phones could make calls and get messages. Any thoughts as to why and if there are any remedies? My guess is the voice/messaging antenna doesn't work as well as their phones.

The only thing I can say is that one thing I personally have no complaints about is the voice RF reception on this phone. I have been very happy with it. Even in weak signal areas. Having said that, it is true that every specific device can be different in this regard.
