I am quite new to 3G and how it works. I am planning on buying the Optimus V, but I looked up on VM's website and the two places I will be spending most of my time the next couple years have "good" and "fair" for voice coverage.

The 3G Data Coverage only seems to be along highways so I am a little confused. How far away can I be for it to still work for me?

While I cant really answer your question. Here is what I would do If I were you. Before you laugh just read.
You can get a whole package deal from HSN.com for 199.00 free shipping and it comes with 25 dollar airtime card, car charger, gel case and all the standard goodies. If I were you get it try it out and see how it works. If it does not work for you return it and get your money back.
That would be what I would do. When I got mine, before I did anything, I got home turned it on to even see if I had signal. One I got confirmed signal I went ahead and activated the phone.

The question is do you need the android phone?
If you cant get solid 3g is that a deal breaker?

If 3g is a deal breaker I would utilize the 30 day from a retailer, like Bet Buy or Target.
That way you dont have to wait to get your money back. I also would grab the 25 dollar plan as a test.
That way your only out 25 bucks instead of 40 or 60. If the service works for what you want in the first two weeks keep the phone.

Remember each phone is slightly different, even tho they are mass produced not every chip, resister, capacitor is equal. People here have reported different results for overclocking and such. SO you might get a badass signal and I get a ass signal standing right next to you.

Sorry about the late reply, but thanks a lot guys.

I decided to get the phone, testing it out and I will keep you updated.
