What is the difference. Between the 2 arrows and the d that show up in the notification bar next to the 3g icon?

What is the difference. Between the 2 arrows and the d that show up in the notification bar next to the 3g icon?

The arrows are there when there when the device is sending/receiving information from the network. The "D" just indicates that it is idle.
