3G lighting up every time I unlock device?

Is this normal? I wasn't 100% sure...

yes, this is normal. the phone is merely showing it has 3g data connection.

to test, turn on wifi. press power button to 'sleep'. press power button again, unlock phone & see if the 3g icon re-appears. if it doesn't, then you know it's functioning correctly & not appearing when you've told the phone you wish for data to be sent/received via wifi.
