The new Froyo update apparently comes with 3G mobile hotspot. Is that from Verizon? Is it free to use?

Nope its not free . I was hoping it was but was told it wasn't as well

Kind of dumb if you think about it.

They want you to pay extra for a feature that uses the same bandwidth you have already paid for. You don't get a bump in speed, or amount allowed, just spending money for the ability.

Not a one time fee like an app expense either. That might may some sense.

There are free options available. Not sure if they all still work with Froyo, but would be a bit surprised if they didn't. Keep the money and get the same benefits.

Off the hotspot topic for a moment, but has anyone had a chance to try out the Tether for Android Beta (if you received the invite which I haven't)?

Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus buyers get it for free... that is part of the promotion for those phones. I have a friend at work with one, she gets it free.

This is correct, it is free for Palm users, they need only pay for the $29.99 data feature. This was a bonus Verizon had to throw about a month after release in because they were having problems moving inventory, since the Droid had already become hugely popular at that point.

There is only 1 $20, its better then when they were charging $30 for single computer tethering.

Right. Except now there is a 2GB limit on bandwidth, instead of 5GB when they were charging $30. Sadly, that 2GB plan is all they offer.

But who pays for tethering anyway

What if you are rooted? Logically, it has to be possible... you are getting the data in regardless, how its routed should be all phone side, which you can mess with, right? Maybe I'm missing something?

Oh ya, and this is pretty much my first post here!

Okay, cool. I was just reading stuff elsewhere about you have to be careful with overuse, or verizon might do something. Does anyone know about that?

I know that the wireless tether you have to pay for but what about USB tether. I heard that was suppose to be included in Froyo but haven't heard if it costs extra.
