[3G version] Tell time during calls?

I was on the phone (using the 3G watch number) and wanted to find out what time it was. Turns out, I don't think this is possible on the watch while on a phone call? No combination of screen taps, swipes, or button presses reveals the time of day (just the duration of my phone call). Anyone else noticed this or have a workaround? Verizon model here.
