Does anyone know if 3rd party messaging apps can be used with project Fi? I have been using mysms and I really like the service. I am interested in Project Fi but I don't want to be forced into a Hangouts only scenario. Any thoughts?
Project Fi is a way to connect to the internet, it doesn't specify the content you send over it. But SMS uses your phone connection (2G), not the internet. If you use MMS to send files or group messages, project Fi should handle it (they claim it does).

You'll be able to use third party messaging apps as long as you do not want to opt-in to the ability to utilize your messaging on multiple devices (tablets, computers, etc.). In order to use that, you'd need to use Hangouts.
