Talked with tech support today approx 10:00 who was not specific as to what the square box with a down arrow was.
I asked if it was a software update like kitkat aka 4.4.2? She continued to say"it's a software update". I will not download 4.4.2, it has sabotaged my friend's system.
How do I delete the square box with the down arrow?

Welcome to Android Central! You can't really delete a system notification. You can always ignore it. Or you could root your phone and install a custom ROM, if you don't want to accept the official system update.

You have two options, as your in a bad spot now;

(1) Either root your phone soon as after the 3rd decline of the update notification it will auto update. Once rooted you need to clear the update's cache and freeze a few items with Titanium backup so it does not happen again (search for more on this).

(2) Reset your phone from an earlier backup. If you don't have one then do a full reset. After it reboots immediately turn and keep wifi off. The update can only download into the phone when it's on wifi.
