Bit of a worrying episode this morning in that my 4 XL updated to the most recent OS and restarted fine.

I received a text message 5mins later and the phone crashed and wouldn't restart. No matter what buttons I pressed in any order, nothing. Like it was completely dead!

It was on 95% when it did its update, so no battery issues.

The phone is OEM OS with no unusual apps running at all, no Bootloader unlock etc

I panicked and got through to Google support who, in all honesty, were useless as kept on asking very simple silly questions when I'd said to the support bod a number of times that I'd checked everything possible and I'm fairly tech savvy.

Gave up on them and spoke to my local Carphone Warehouse, where I bought it from and they said they'd do a straight swap as it's less than 30 days old...

Anyways, 2 mins after that I got the phone going and it's been absolutely fine since.

So could this have been a weird app issue, or a hardware issue (ie is there a bug report I can find that may show this)?

Any suggestions as to what can be checked? Still wondering whether to still swap this over or persevere and see how it goes over the next few days

When the phone crashed, how long did you press and hold the Power button for? In these situations, you might have to press and hold Power for about 20 seconds for something to happen. You might even have to do it twice -- the first time to force a shutdown (in case the phone has crashed and is actually still on, but only showing a blank screen), then again to power back on.

I would assume that the phone is fine now and it was some weird bug issue with the update. I would play it safe and get the replacement, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks. Held it down a lot longer than 20 seconds, a number of times!

Did that a good few times over the period of 20 mins & then all of a sudden it kicked back into life

I’ve restarted it a few times now & no further issues

Agree.

It’s working fine now, so hoping it was just a glitch

Glad you got it working :)

As mentioned I would just keep an close eye on . Hopefully you got some days left before your 30 days has expired to do so . Its quite possible it was just that a glitch since all is good again.

I'm not sure about how to send a bug report in , if it does not mention that in a certain app that has possibly crashed.
That shows one has been created and with the option to send it in

Yeah; it's fine now, like it never happened

Quite happy to keep running with it.

Had issues before with a previous Nexus 6P and Pixel 2 XL and Google swapped them out with new ones with a day, so past experience has been great with them etc

I would swap it out for a brand new one while you have the chance versus playing "refurb roulette" when it craps out on you down the road ;-)
