I'm not sure if this belongs in the EVO 4G forum or the Sprint forum but anywho...

So far there is absolutely ZERO WiMax 4G coverage shown for Wisconsin. Well today I randomly turned on my 4G radio and did a scan... and got connected! I don't know how this happened, all I know is it did. Here is what was listed in the connection settings:

Network Provider: Sprint
Signal Strength: Poor
IP Address: (can't remember, but it had a valid IP.)

I was able to load a few web pages and they loaded just as fast as my WiFi. Ten I was disconnected. I'm in Oshkosh, WI, by the way, so nowhere near Milwaukee or Madison, and 40 to 50 miles south of Green Bay.

Anyone have any idea how this happened?

They are providing more coverage and testing this in a lot of locations. My guess is a tower near you got the hardware and they are testing it to some extent. If you are like a lot of other markets that see this you will see it go on and off many times. How close are they to turning it on for good in your location? Could be weeks or months, but seeing it once is a good sign of things to come!

I think 4G is popping up in Oshkosh in conjunction with all the construction. It's on no Sprint marketing lists, but they must b running something along the highways n downtown. Download the Sensorly app to get more details on the coverage, as well as to help add data points.

Thanks for the info on the App. I've talked to friends in other parts of the state and they can't connect to WiMax anywhere. I get a better signal near the lake and the highway, so you might be right on the construction theory.

As a matter of discussion, I got 5.5 Mbps down and 1Mbps up near Jackson/Murdock which shows full 4G on the icon, although there is word in the community that the speed test.net app doesn't properly measure 4G. In comparison wifi on At&t U-verse is 10-12 Mbps.

Interesting. I have to run some errands today, so it'll be interesting to see how 4G is around town.

How long has this been up? I used to randomly try my 4G every week or so, just out of curiosity, but I haven't tried it for awhile. I was so surprised when it connected today.

I was interested in finding out when/where LTE for VZW will be available in WI, and another thread indicated the app sensorly. I started it up and when it locked on to my position I was surrounded by green yet there was/is none in Mke for Sprint. Definitely was floored, but based on how Sprint coverage centers on highways, it makes a lil sense with all the construction from here thru Appleton. Starting to think I'll stick around w/ Sprint unless Clearwire actually does go belly up.

I've been randomly connecting in Oshkosh, but it mostly times out. I believe the very weak 4G coverage is to comply with FCC regulation on rural areas.

Check clearwires maps, sometimes they will give you a little info that won't show up on sprint's site. It looks like there are some towers periodically from Fond du Lac to Green Bay.

Yeah, I looked at Clear's map after someone mentioned Twitter rumors of WiMax popping up in Kalamazoo, MI. According to that map, the Kalamazoo area is covered, but "not for sale" yet. On subsequent trips there, I've not been able to get on.

I stay in Beloit and stay connected at my house and even in my basement! I stay on the west side of town and it actually is pretty good coverage.
