What kind of 4g speeds can I expect? I realize based on conditions such as location and weather that it will vary. I usually get about 1.5 to 5 mbps per speed test over here in Akron, oh.
After numerous tests in strong 4G areas around the country (from FL, GA, SC, NC, MO, IN, KS to CO) I've come to the conclusion that most of the variance comes from the backhaul pipe size available at the cell site.
Just moments ago I sat parked in the parking lot at a cell site here in Denver with antennas mounted on top of an office building. Total full 4G signal. It tested at 4MB down and 4MB up. I feel pretty sure that since this is a local leased space on top of a building that around 4MB is probably the max capacity of the land-line pipe available at the building (cell site).
Fastest I have seen on my phone is 31 down and 12 up, also in Southern California. Usually it is 5-15 down, 1-3 up. It's been very dependent on location; I get much faster speeds at ground level in a strip mall than in my office.
At work I average around 25-30Mbps down and 15Mbps up. Just last week I checked outside the office and I did two speed tests and both were 44.79Mbps down.
Now at home I only average around 7-10Mbps down as I'm in a valley (and hence an Extended Coverage Area).
Typically I average in downtown Boston between 8 - 16mbps down and 2 - 6mbps up. The fastest I've personally recorded through Speedtest is 41mbps down and 7mbps up I believe.
