4g upgrade for the Xoom

What is involved with the upgrade to the 4g system on the Xoom? From what it looks like, they need to add a card into the built in slot on the device. Is there additional software, firmware, or etc. that is required as well?

I'm trying to understand why we will have to send the thing into Motorola in order to get the upgrade.
