I just got my Galaxy 4g and I seem to be fine when a 4G network is available but when it is not I automatically switch to Edge insteada of 3G. Is this normal? The manual says it is capable of 3G.

It will never say 3G. Ever. The phone has no capability whatsoever of displaying the difference between the '4G' HSPA+ network and T-mobile's regular HSDPA network.

I believe you are wrong. When my phone switches to 3g the icon by the signal bar says G. When it switches to 4g, the icon switches to 4g; edge is E.

G=GPRS, which is basically 1G.

OP: Chances are your 3G area has been upgraded to 4G, so you never actually see 3G.

I see 3g+ when i have the H showing, when i have the G or E showing it shows T-Mobile "2G" I have yet to show the HSPA+ because they haven't rolled out 4g yet. all shown in "Android Status" downloaded from the market.

The phone cant tell 3G and 4G apart. So chances are that you dont have 3G in the area either

I know this is an old thread, but it's still coming up in search engines and I thought I might reply and offer clarity. If there is 3G coverage in your area the phone will show 3G. The problem is that T-Mobile doesn't have much 3G around and that's why you don't see it. There network is mostly HSPA+ 4G and EDGE. The phones are capable of detecting the difference between 3G and 4G. I've picked up 3G on my Galaxy S Blaze, but it's been rare.
