Hey, keep this real...please no bashing etc...I just want to understand what people actually know about if/when this phone will actually be 4G. Was that a bad marketing ploy by AT&T? Is it possible we will never go faster than we do now?

this phone is hspa+ only it will never be 4G as it doesnt have the required LTE chip on board. the requirement for 4G is approximatly 100 mbit/s wich we wont see any time soon on any carrier. you can read about it here 4G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the next gen of phones on ATT will be LTE capable there are images of a new motorola phone (supposedly called Atrix 2) which will have LTE radio installed so if you want Atrix with "4G" you can wait for that phone. but LTE is being rolled out only in a few select cities (I am in NY and as far as i know this city is not among them) so to answer your last question, Yes it was a very blatant move from ATT to call their hspa+ network (which sucks btw and often doesnt even give true hspa speeds) a 4G. of course we'll go faster once the LTE is completely rolled out in all locations but it'll take months if not years before we see it. on a side note LTE radio is a real battery hog. so I'm quite OK with my Atrix right now.

The so-called "4G" phones on ATT are outright frauds. Plain and simple. IMO, their credibility is non-existant.

As Trevalkin correctly points out, ATT frequently(and typically in many areas) cannot even supply 3G speeds. Given the "success" of ATT's HSPA+ network, it will take years for them to move to widespread LTE, regardless of what ATT's press releases claim.

This recent GB update wrecked the radio on my Atrix, and I can no longer get anything but EDGE speeds. So, be greatful for whatever you have. It's all you will get out of the Atrix and the ATT network, for years to come.

yes attweco I absolutely agree. while Atrix is an awesome phone it is crippled by the the most horrible carrier in the States. Now that Sprint has Photon I feel so sad that I stuck with ATT for another two years... I'll see if Verizon and Sprint will have something interesting next year so I might just pay that termination fee after all..

I call AT&T 4G fake G because that is exactly what it was. They got 4G redefine so their hspa+ network could be 4g. In my the USA the only 4G networks are Verizon and sprint.

Sent from my rooted Atrix 2.3.4

If you looked realllllllly close at the fine print they call there current 4G, 3G w/ enhanced backhall. No I'm not joking...

I would also suggest using the search function next time, this topic has been discussed many a time before.
