Getting 2 - 3 Mbps best case in NY. Better than 3g, but not much.

Is there some sort of trick?

I have heard many stories of heavily populated areas in NY just getting absolutely abysmal data speeds on LTE even with a really strong signal. This is because the strain on the network is so heavy.

Why only Verizon? Att and T-Mobile are much faster. Vz have magnitudes more users? Or maybe they just focus on the map and not the network performance?
I thought it was my old phone that was the problem, guess not.

When you say NY, do you mean NYC or the rest of the state?

And if it is NYC, do you mean Manhattan or the unimportant boroughs?? (I have family in da Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens...so let's not cry...and if you're in Staten Island...well, tuff ----. LOL. )

I am going to have to visit Manhattan sometime after work and just play around with my Note 2. There is no way Verizon's Network sucks that much...

Midtown and downtown. Brooklyn bridge area in Brooklyn. Voice is usually OK. Miss some calls in Manhattan, data is slow.

Vz must be having issues, I cannot even get any signal at this point. Maybe there is just some sort of outage right now.

Could be an outage but also could be network congestion. I've always hear NY is a very congested market for them.

I'm a grad student (Illinois, not NY), and when I get to campus every day, I notice my upper teens mbps at my apartment down drop to 3ish mbps down on campus. I think Verizon is starting to have serious issues with tower congestion.

Just to close this up, I ended up on a support call and after resetting my SIM card we came to the conclusion this is being caused by network congestion. I am regretting sticking with VZ, but at least I don't have any regrets giving up the unlimited data, as it would be impossible to ever reach the limit on my current plan with the existing network - and saves $10 per month. Glad I have wifi.

If you were going to get rid of your unlimited data, you could have sold the rights to your line on ebay. Look up "Verizon Grandfathered Unlimited Data" plan and see the potential hundreds you could have made selling the line...

There is network congestion, but then there is exaggeration. Times Square, Downtown, I go all over Manhattan and I don't experience this dial-up experience you are trying to sell. I'm also in Jersey, a spit's distance from NYC...still no network congestion.

I did some digging - I am hardly alone with these issues, without exaggeration. Apparently VZ is deploying AWS LTE to combat the issue and most of their phones (like the MotoX) will be able to use it via firmware update.
Thanks for the info on the unlimited data, my capped plan costs less and has unlimited minutes and text - which I was over constantly. I would have swapped the plan anyhow, I always thought it was wasteful I was paying for unlimited use of my 500 kbps data (my average 3G speed) network.

If all you care about is unlimited minutes and text, you could have just gotten a basic phone and then got a prepaid smartphone that just handles data. It isn't "wasteful" to have unlimited data, though you would be one of those guys that would hate me for streaming my music on high quality with no caching just so I could have a 20-30GB month...(and I do.... :D )

But if I was going to get rid of unlimited data, I would have sold my line on eBay and made some coin on it instead of just letting it go...but to each his own, I guess. Just don't turn into those unlimited data haters and turn into a Stockholm Syndrome victim by saying you love your capped data plan and hate those still with unlimited...I, in return, will not insult you or your capped data plan. (laughs.)

cg101,

You are missing my point. I was paying more for unlimited data and being forced to use wifi for data, because the unlimited data pipe was useless. The "capped" plan included unlimited minutes and texts which worked out better for me (and cost me 25 less per month). There is nothing wrong with unlimited data plans - and I stream music constantly - via wifi as my 3G and now 4g network will not support high quality streaming. I swapped my plan out when the new plans were announced - it bothered me I had to pay $15 extra to connect to work email - the "business unlimited plan" was a crock.

If it worked for me, I would opt out of wifi via FIOS and use 4G via hotspot at this point - but VZ's network sucks. Laugh at me because I stuck with VZ as a carrier, that I can accept.

Just to close this out - VZ has vastly improved LTE service in midtown Manhattan. Just ran a test and getting 40Mbps down and 28+ upload. Good job VZ, it's like an early Christmas present.

Chicago, too.

You guys are lucky I'm still at 0.17 Mbps in the region I live in (Fargo, ND).
That's not the whole town but where I live and work. Verizon told me on Friday night that it's being worked on.

(Back story: I live near two Verizon Corporate stores and two other retailers. They told me that the network is so over loaded here that they weren't able to activate new phones in the store. So, they put up a new tower just in the stores but that's it.
That irritated me. They will cover the store only.
The main reason it's so busy is because of the main shopping mall and the entire shopping district is here.
I would think that they are working on additional towers or... something but I don't know. They already have two main towers on the same street within 20 blocks or so of each other. Maybe they can't do anything more.

Do they have band 4 lte activated? If so, you can root and enable band 4 lte on the note 3, which should be lighter traffic than band 13. You can also force band 4, but Note that if you did this, you would only get LTE, no voice.

And today I have zip-nada-no service in the Flatiron District. Today is worse than usual, but it's only in the last week or so that I even saw speeds above 1 mbps during business hours--and I assumed that was because work was slow around the Thanksgiving holiday. Throughout the fall, my speedtests were routinely in the <1 mbps range (3G was usually faster).

Those of you who say VZW ain't that bad, well, you're lucky you're neighborhood is getting service. Unfortunately, that seems to be true for every other carrier in NYC as well, where an avenue one way or the other can be the difference between great service and nothing, so I'm still on VZW...for now.
