Good day. I have unlocked and rooted my N6 to add the double tap to wake functionality. My device has received the prompt to update to 5.01 several times but errors out each time at installation. I am not a root expert and I'm seeking information on whether this is due to root or not. While locked and stock, I never received the 5.01 update.

Any help presented will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Starting with 5.0, ANY change to the stock OS will make the OTA fail. You choices are (1) manually download the update and flash manually, or (2) unroot and lock, take the OTA and then reroot and unlock.

FTFY :)
Can't flash the update - same as the OTA, it will fail if there are any system changes.

Upgrading a modified phone takes a little work... mostly flashing the right files manually, connecting your phone to a computer.

Go look in the dev sections... there may be a flashable version you can load with a custom recovery.

Might be a good time to read up on how to properly root, backup, update/reload... it isn't as difficult as it sounds, and you'll be much better off for it.

You could use wugs toolkit to restore to stock, update and re root.

I might wipe your device, I cannot remember.

It's best to go back to stock and take the update and then root. Being rooted can make the updates fail like others have said.

There is some misinformation in this thread!

If all you have done is unlocked and rooted, then the easiest way to take the update is to do a full unroot (this is an option in SuperSu, if that's what you are using). It is not necessary to relock the bootloader. The OTA will then succeed, at which point you can re-root. Locking the bootloader would force you to once again unlock the bootloader, which would wipe your phone. This is unnecessary.

If, however, you have done more than just unlock and root (such as de-encrypt or custom recovery), then I think it's easier to flash a 5.01 image onto your device rather than trying to revert to stock in order to take the OTA.

I appreciate all of the replies. I am using the stock build as I didn't want to change it. I merely wanted to use tap to wake and the LED functionality. I guess I will unroot through SuperSU and re-root the device. This community is great! Thanks again.

Yeah.... the OTAs have become extremely sensitive to system changes. I played around with the 5.0.1 OTA a bit to see what would cause issues and something as benign as a modification to the build.prop caused it to trip and the OTA to kick out. The OTA is designed to protect you from screwing up your phone, so it runs all these verification steps to make sure that all the stars are aligned prior to flashing.

But yes...download the Nexus Root Toolkit from Wugfresh. It is an incredibly useful tool that is quite easy to use, but really powerful. It'll go out and find the files it needs most of the time, and it does a good job of explaining the hows and whys of what it does. Now, there's nothing the toolkit can do that you can't on your own (and it'd be good to learn... its not rocket science), but it is just so damn easy to use that I still use it when I need to fuss with my stuff, mostly to just save time.

With that toolkit, you'll be able to snag the 5.0.1 factory image then ONLY install the bits that you need out of it rather than a full-on factory refresh (which will completely wipe your phone). In fact, I just used it the other day to update my wife's Nexus 5 from 5.0 to 5.0.1.

:) My suggestion to any and all Nexus owners is to unlock and load a custom recovery immediately .. whether they want to flash custom stuff or not. It allows you to make GOOD backups of your phone, not to mention make it a lot easier to load updates.

I'm in the same boat. Have rooted for Lightflow and AdAway, but no other changes. This, to me, is the optimal balance between adding useful features, while keeping stock Android and easy OTA updates.

You are correct about not having to relock the bootloader - no need for that. But I believe the unroot option of SuperSU will not permit you to take OTA. With Lollipop, Google looks to see if the system files or non-user-data partition have been modified. So, even if you added a file to the system region, and then removed it, the partition is now 'modified', and OTA doesn't work.

If, however, you have done more than just unlock and root (such as de-encrypt or custom recovery), then I think it's easier to flash a 5.01 image onto your device rather than trying to revert to stock in order to take the OTA.
Absolutely. No reason to go back to stock and then take OTA - just flash the new system images instead.

Do let us know if you are able to unroot and take OTA. As I mentioned above, I suspect that won't work, but if I'm wrong, I'd certainly like to know.

Interesting. That would really suck. Yes, I'd quite like to know if it works also.

Yes, it will wipe your device.

Well.. it does... but you can then reload the data partition after updating and get your stuff back (at least that's why I usually do in cases like this). And you don't HAVE to do a wipe when flashing the stock images. It is an easy modification to the script that you run to flash the factory image and NRT actually has an option to skip the data wipe if you use the tool. If you are going from 5.0 (modified) to 5.0 (stock), issues will be rare.

Yeah.. I know... 'its recommended to wipe...." blah blah blah. But if you have decent backups, you can do anything you damn well please... :) It's a Nexus!
