5.1 build E

I sideloaded the it's build D, now that the factory files are available for build E, would I be able to flash the factory files to be able to get on build E, or if an ota becomes available, would I be able to sideload the different build even though I'm already on 5.1?

You can flash the factory image to build E. No need for the OTA.

Can I do this on a Mac, when I have already sideloaded 5.1D, and I have never unlocked my bootloader, without having to wipe my phone?

So in order to flash this does my device have to be unlocked? I keep getting an error when trying the first step in the flash process.

What is the error? If you flash the zip from google you'll need to OEM unlock the boot loader first then afterwards you can lock it again if you like

That must be the reason I can't get the process started to flash the files. I didn't know I had to unlock the boot loader to get the process to work.

Is it better Than D? I will flash it tonight I think. I just think it's so good on this build in not sure I need to wipe again

M is for Tmobile where as the E build is supposed to be for Verizon.

Noob question:
I flashed the first 5.1 factory image but downloaded the M release from an OTA that was posted on Android Police. Would I be able to side load via Toolkit?

I sideloaded D and really liked it. I flashed E and kept it for a few hours and did not like it. Hard to explain, but it felt more sluggish and my wifi did not seem as good. Flashed back to D. I have a google play N6 on ATT network. I also saw where ATT is sending out the 5.1 update and it is the D version.
