Hi, everyone.
Im new here, and to droid phones(i just defected over from Iphone)
I have the incredible, so far love it. My question is, isnt it suppose to have 512mb ram? According to my android system info app it has 404 max. Is ram like other mass storage, an 8g memory card really only has like 7.4gb?
Thanks to all

the 8gb card never really is a full 8gb because of how the number is calculated. its 8gb theoretically but its more like 7.6 and a 4 is more like 3.8, and so on. The ram where are you getting the number from?

If you go into Settings -> SD & Phone Storage, you should see 748mb of total "Phone memory" and how much is "Available" (unused). I have about 117 apps and still have 465 mb available. The phone shipped with more RAM that the official specs stated.

Welcome to Android!

Also, when you get froyo, you'll be able to store apps on the SD card and free up more phone memory. I don't think I'll ever run out of RAM, but some people may have that issue.

Im getting it from the android system info app, under system info, under memory info.

I'm not familiar with the app, but it seems to be reporting inaccurately. Go to the menu BSG75 pointed out and report what it says under Phone Memory.

I think you guys are getting confused between ROM and RAM.

The phone has 512MB of RAM however while the phone is running the Android system and running apps will be using a certain amount of that, so you may only have 404 free after the other have used some of it.

The phone has 1GB of ROM which is where apps are installed too the Android system ect. So after android is done you will have about 800MB give or take free for apps. This is what is referred to as the "Phone Memory" inside the menu --> settings --> sd & phone storage menu. So no the phone didn't ship with more memory than advertised.

As far as SD card etc being smaller than what is reported it's called formating. Post formating your size will be smaller due to padding added between sectors for block size, error checking and whatever else the system needs to put there. So yes you do have 8GB of internal memory but once it is partitioned and formatted you are left with about 6GB of usable space for storage since it hasn't been used up for ROM, System files etc etc.

According to my system info it says that i have 404 max ram with 250 free. so in other words if i have 512ram the system is using 108ram leaving me with 404, 250 of which is free?

Kind of confusing how the app dev. wrote the program to read that way. I guess they just took the ram used by the os right out of the equation.

The SD card is the SD card
The internal phone storage is another 8 gigs of storage. I show 6.60gb available
Phone Memory is the Ram for apps. I show 748mb with 610 available.
Internal Memory

No, Qazme is right. I misread and thought OP was talking about ROM. I've never bothered to look at the amount of RAM available.

The Dinc has 768 ROM and 512 RAM. RAM is just that -- DRAM that is used to store data when the system is active. The flash ROM figure (768MB) is misrepresented in HTC's documentation as being only 512 -- hence the 512 RAM/512 ROM stat you see -- but Phil Nickinson confirmed with them for his review that it has 768 MB for app storage.

ROM(phone storage) is static, not in motion until put in motion. Just like a storage card, cd, or floppy.
RAM(phone memory) is dynamic, always in motion, like the os or running app's.
right?

Its not the posts that r confusing, its the fact that htc specs 512ram, my phone says 748, and the system info app says 404. I dont know if I trust the app info, it also says my phone storage is 748mb. Thats along way from 8gig.

Someone else should download this app, and see how it reads their device. Its "android system info", the dev is Electricsheep.
