Upon initial setup (unlocked variant) I noticed that 50gb of storage was used for the system. Is this normal? Does this have to do with the way the storage is formatted? Thanks

I'm using an unlocked 512 GB on T-Mobile, and it applied the August security patch after booting to the homescreen for the first time. It reports 46.3 GB used as "system memory."

512GB = 477 GiB.

That's with absolutely nothing on the drive. The system partition is usually 10-15gb.so what you guys are saying makes perfect sense.

Folks, almost 9% of storage is formatting. Same for any storage. The bigger the storage, the bigger the allocation.

Factor in the OS and space reserved for operation, that fitty gigs seems about right. Yes, I typed "fitty".

Why advertise it as 128 and 512 then?
Because they can. Sure they can do the right thing but that would put them at a disadvantage with Apple, lg, Google, and all smartphone makers,who all do the same deceptive practice.

Of course if everyone stops buying smartphones and let the manufacturers know this then I guarantee that things will change. But that ain't going to happen. Sure people will complain, but 99.9% will buy anyway so Samsung doesn't care.

I mean relatively it's a small issue. Consider that Verizon actively and heavily throttles firefighters who are risking their lives fighting major fire... And refused at first to lift the throttle despite it being against human decency not to mention the law. They did lift it after firefighter changed plan. How many people will leave Verizon because of this?
