6.54gb used up by 'Other'

Without rooting is there anyway to lower the size of 'Other' on the HTC One? Having over a fifth of my storage wasted on day1 is pretty ridiculous!

You'd have to remove a lot of the apps that came on the phone. If you're only rooting and not flashing another ROM (at some point), be careful which apps you remove because it could cause system issues if it's something that is core to the OS functionality. But in most cases, you can easily get rid of the HTC apps you don't need/want without issue once it's rooted.

To be honest that pretty normal and unavoidable. The GS3 has over 4GB of internal storage used up out of the box and I imagine the GS4 will be MUCH worse because of all the new S-App bloatware/crapware.

Isn't some of that space the system recovery partition. That is the reason why if you can get a 64GB you should and if you can't at least get the 32GB of any phone instead of a 16GB.
