Just saw a screen shot of a Verizon computer putting the xoom at $799. Ouch.

I'm so pro Xoom, but think I might wait for the G-Slate to at least drive the price down a little, that's too steep. One X factor for me though is the display technology if it's something comparable to the ipad2, samoled+, nova display then i'll probably still jump on it.

Yea that is pricey. At least there's no monthly carrier charges. Maybe places like Walmart, Target or Kohls will hopefully carry it and sell it cheaper like they do for the iPad.

Yikes but I bet it will be pretty cheap with a 2 year contract I bet.

I'm wondering if the Wifi-only version will be out at the same time and hopefully considerably cheaper..

Is the xoom a real tablet or is it just one of those 7"mini tablets?

I want a real tablet, not that 7"crap which is the reason I didn't get the galaxy tab

It's a 10.1" super tablet.

Its a 10 inch. I want this so bad but can't see spending that much. Was thinking more like 599 and I would be all over it. If a wifi only drops too it would only be something like 100 cheaper. I hate to wait but might see what happens when the Acer and Toshiba ones come out. Might drive the price down.

$799.00 is a lot and, I won't make a decision until I actually see some reviews and test it myself. A 32Gb Wi-fi + 3g Ipad is $729.00 so, I wasn't expecting the Xoom to be that cheap.

This might not even be the real price. Maybe maybe not. I will wait for the Official announcement.

That's what I'm thinking. Didn't they say they wanted to be priced 'competitive with iPad?" I don't think this price point fits the bill. I'm willing to say that it's a placeholder price until it worked out. It looks better for them to lower the price by $150 than have it leaked to be $599 and priced at $649 on release. Not saying $649 is the price at that, but $799 is simply too ridiculous to make any significant market penetration.

That price is just unbelievable, I'm speechless... until it become official.

600 is my absolute limit for a wifi only Android tablet. I hope this isn't true. But it could be a placeholder, or maybe Moto staged this leak through Verizon to see what reaction the community has to the price? Doubtful, but possible.

Still, if it's this much off contract... I don't see it doing well.

It is off contract price. This is likely to prevent another best buy issue, where best buy dropped the price of the tab $100 before anyone else did. Verizon's making a push for contract free tablets, but don't be surprised if they have a contract option for this one (unlike the tab)

Guys remember what we're comparing this too. The 32GB 3g+wifi ipad is less than $100 cheaper than this and this has quite a few features that will increase the price (larger, higher res screen. camera's, LTE radio, etc). You also have to remember economies of scale here. Apple uses the SAME chip, Ram, etc across three major lines (iphone, ipad, ipod) which lowers unit costs considerably.

The real issue here is that most people have no idea just how expensive these kind of electronics are. Yes, part of this is markup, but these things aren't cheap. That Evo/Droidx/Droid Incredible cost over $500-$600 (at least) for your carrier to buy. So you're talking a $200-$300 difference between your PHONE and a fully functional (hopefully) tablet.

Is it a lot of money? Yes. Is it unreasonable? Not really, considering what it is. If the thing is junk, then yes, $800 is too much, but if this thing is what it's promising it's right around the price you should expect it to be.

It would be great to get one of these things for $500, but unlike laptops/netbooks, tablet hardware is still rare enough to be expensive (and not benefit from economies of scale). Prices WILL come down.

But do you guys remember what laptops were when they first hit mass market? Heck, what netbooks used to cost?

I'm going to be holding out on this until we get some sort of official announcement from Motorola or Verizon. If that is the case, big mistake from both of them. That puts this thing in the pricing range with laptops -- yikes.

Didn't Google say they wanted cheap smartphones. I know they were talking about smart phones but I would think that it would go for tablets also...

This will be the case for all of 2 weeks or so actually. Apple will then annouce the iPAD 2 sometime in February and then we will need to compare the XOOM to the iPAD 2 - which is rumored to have significantly better specs than the original (way higher res screen than the XOOM, 2 cameras, etc, etc). Of course the iPAD is established already as the CLEAR market leader off the bat. I don't think Moto or VZW can justify charging more due to technical comparisons with the iPAD 1 (or even iPAD 2 really).

Keep in mind none of us really know how well Honeycomb will perform compared to iOS on the iPADs regarding smoothness, usability, lag, etc. I am excited and will be getting the XOOM, but even assuming it comes out of the gate smooth as butter on 3.0, it still has to compete with a established, polished tablet UI in the iPAD2. Pricing is very very key here, more than I think Moto realizes....

Absolutely agree.

Are you serious? Even assuming that these companies are offloading a large portion of their NRE (non-recurring engineering, i.e. R&D that can be used over and over for their next tablets) costs onto the consumer, which in and of itself is crap, they are still looking at a 50% profit margins on these products. No where else in the tech world are those kind of margins attainable because consumers don't tolerate it. So why then are consumers so willing to bend over for them in the mobile space?

Here's a rough example of where Isuppli broke down the component costs of an iPhone and even if it was off by 10-20% it still shows that Apple makes huge profit on them. (Its by no means only apple that charges stupid prices though)
iSuppli: iPhone 4 parts cost $187.51

Granted that breakdown doesn't take every thing into account but it gives you an idea.

I also don't believe that's the actual price. I feel the motorola should release a wifi only version that comes in at 499 w/o contract. The ipad has set the bar and even if the ipad 2 comes in at 50-70 higher, I bet you apple will still keep the original ipad at 499. In order for android to make up ground they will have to be competitively priced ,offering more features for a better value.

If the average person goes into a bestbuy and there's an android HC tablet and an ipad next to it priced the same, which do you think they will buy? This is where android has an advantage having more hardware manufacturers so if the xoom comes out too high, its an opportunity for Toshiba and lg to come it at a more competitive price (as long as they don't place a horrible skin on HC)

Are you F'n kidding me...$800?!?! I can get a pretty damn good laptop for that.

Apple never goes "up" in pricing. They have firmly established 3 models & pricepoints of iPad at each level of connectivity. They're not gonna budge from that. Like it or not, competitors, the bar has been set.

I unfortunately have a very good feeling that is the actual price. If it was a placeholder price, then it would be something really outrageous like $9,999.99. I think we've seen that figure before from VZW & BB. $800 is the perfectly price for Moto & VZ to arrogantly think they can one-up the iPad and tap the huge unfulfilled potential for an highend tablet with enormous margins in the process.

At any rate, this thing is DOA if it's priced a penny over $600. The average consumer doesn't care about 3G, 4G or how much storage is built-in. They care first and foremost about price, then about formfactor/size, weight, and # of available apps. A tablet is a luxury. I probably know a dozen or more people with iPads and they are ALL wi-fi models, with all but 1 or 2 being the 16gb version.

These people are not buying a tablet to replace a notebook. They basically buy it in lieu of a netbook to have something easier to handle to use around the house for Youtube, casual games, web browsing, and checking recipies, email, and stocks. And occasionally bring it to Starbucks. That's it. All tablets are present are purely luxury and convenience devices, not desktop or even real notebook replacements.

For these kinds of prices, I'll gladly buy a Viewsonic GTablet (or similar at the $400 pricepoint) and flash a new ROM on it or simply give up and buy an iPad. There's now a GIGANTIC opportunities for all of these little 2nd-tier companies like Archos, Viewsonic, Coby etc. to get off their butts and capture a huge slice of the budget-conscious enthusiast tablet market.

First one to market with a "real" tablet approximatey the size & build quality of the Nook Color running stock Honeycomb (or even Gingerbread) is going to make big $.

Back to Moto & VZ: If this price is indeed genuine, the only hope for Moto to salavage something from the extensive $ they've spent on R&D for the Xoom would be to release a cut-down Xoom for retail that's priced at $450 or $500 or so. That would necessitate maybe a wi-fi only model with 8gb internal storage and just 1 camera....and that would be contingent on getting the microSD slot working ASAP. But there's no way VZW will allow Moto to bypass them with a brick & mortar wi-fi version. So unless official pricing is announced soon, I am tenatively declaring not only the Xoom DOA but Honeycomb and Android tablets in general.
