8gb internal storage?

I was reading about this in the problems and solutions thread and it had a link to a separate thread but the link was broken.

Why don't we have the 8gb as advertised?

I know the OS takes up room and all of that, but only just over 2gb left?

Last I heard someone was saying something about virtual RAID being used to prevent data corruption or some such nonsense.
