8mp vs widescreen

I have noticed that the widescreen mode takes better pictures. I don't exactly know why, but that seems to be the case.

I don't see much difference between the two. One thing that does make a big difference is a clean lens and a blurry lens.

Very true. I don't see much difference either. Does widescreen get more in the picture?

Can the difference be seen when viewing the pictures on a tv or.monitor perhaps

Tried a comparison and it looks like 8mp gives more depth. It almost looks like 6mp is zoomed in a bit but wider.

What 6MP mode does is take an 8MP picture and trim off some pixels at the top and bottom to fit the aspect ratio of your screen. Except for some tricks they can do with the metering it's exactly the same image from exactly the same sensor. When viewing on anything other that large format print medium (we're looking at larger than 8.5"x11") you won't really see any difference. A 1080p TV screen is about 2MP, so except for accidents of scaling where you may be able to get fewer artifacts you shouldn't notice the difference there, either.

However, the placebo effect is strong so if you want to test it out have your spouse take the pictures and make sure she doesn't tell you which is which, that's called double blind testing ;)

Honestly the 6mp just cuts off the top.and bottom.to.make it fit the screen better. But I would rather get more.in the picture and zoom in than have it cut off

i hooked up my dx to my computer monitor at work and found that 8mp shows up full screen where as widescreen has the white border at the top and bottom. this is to be expected

then i hooked up the hdmi out to a widescreen tv and the widescreen photos didn't show up full screen. so basically the widescreen photos are only good for viewing on the dx?

I use 8mp overall but when taking a landscape view, I'll switch to panorama. Used widescreen to just play around and after this thread.

the panorama mode is really cool. don't have much landscape to take pictures of where i live.

I don't either but when I do, it's nice to have and use. I used it once to see how it worked and I loved it.

ya i think i'm going to stay with 8mp. hope i can start using landscape and the other modes more soon

Take 2 pictures of the exact same stationary thing. Something simple that fills up the screen. Start with the 8mpix setting then try the widescreen (6mpix). You will not only see that you have more screen to use in 8 but 6 crops the top and bottom off. I couldn't fit my item in the widescreen. Also look at the file size right on the phone (press the I in the corner while viewing the picture). 8 is more of course.

Never really noticed itbefore since my Droid takes great pics but its good to be aware if you need it somehow. 95% of what I use it for in widescreen is just fine.

So at this point the widescreen basically just fills up the screen on the dx better. The 8mp just gets more on the top and bottom. For the most part widescreen is just fine. I think its the fact that one is more mp I just feel like I should use it

BTW, an 8 mp photo can be enlarged a great deal, even way beyond 8x10, and still hold detail. By "enlarging", I mean drag/drop the pix onto your computer using USB connection, and process in a Photoshop-type program.

The X camera has amazing quality since 2.3.340 update came in. Prior to that, I used Vignette to get a good quality photo. Now I don't need Vingnette. The native camera is better.

Warning - don't use the digital zoom. All it does is cut into the photo, taking a small section and expanding it to size. This results in pixelization, even at 8 mp. Better to take the photo at a regular setting and crop it later via photo program on your computer.

Awesome ya I just wish the 8mp pictures didn't have the border on the sides

my wife looked at the same picture taken with both settings. she said she could easily tell which one was the better mp. i'd say the widescreen isn't terrible but you do cut a lot out of the picture and its less crisp.

on the flip side of that 8mp doesn't fit on the dx screen as nicely which is where you're going to view most pictures
