So am doing my usual web crawling in the morning when I come across this:

$99 ZTE Nexus 5? Why not? | Android and Me

Now, before you all bite off my head, this may be pure conjecture/fantasy, but the question has to be asked:
Would you buy a $99 nexus 5 made by ZTE/Huawei?
It certainly would make for a very curious change in the marketing and sale of handsets

I would personally buy it coz, hell, its $99, but others would walk away since its zte, unless it did not have any zte branding

Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Sony are the companies I'd buy a Nexus from; I took a gamble with LG and am admittedly very pleased. But ZTE? No, definitely not for me.

What if it did not have the ZTE branding, just google and nexus branding, the kind of white oem labelling that t-mobile used back in the day with their 3g touch line?

Plus it would have a tegra 4 and 1080p!!!

ZTE is actually a good brand. I'd get one if the price is right.

ZTE and Huawei are also very bad where IT security is concerned. They're not trustworthy companies at all. Chinese companies have to release phones that are inherently insecure because they don't believe in privacy. As far as IT security is concerned, I'll leave the rest out. They steal intellectual property and trade secrets, and then copy it into their own products. They piggyback on the research and risk of others, which allows them to sell at a cheap price. The Chinese society isn't exactly built to be innovative.

Specifications not exclusive to ZTE. I have no doubt the next Nexus will feature top of the line specifications, just as this one did. Echoing the points others have made, I'll not go near that Chinese company. I'm very interested in the upcoming Motorola "X" phone, part because of the hype, but just as much because Motorola and Google are American companies.

There's no reason to be excited about ZTE adopting 1080 screens and Tegra 4 processors as those will be the standard for the high-end phones in 2013. Lastly, Google partners with companies that are innovative in some way, something ZTE is not. ZTE plays catchup, producing cheap, low class knock-offs. A big no thanks.

If that's enough to scare you from HTC, you may want to abandon all of Google with their innumerable privacy concerns.

Considering that ZTE will only provide the hardware and Google will make the software side of things, I dont think there will be any security loopholes.
But consider this, ZTE makes the hardware, with no ZTE labelling anywhere, and Google markets it as a pure nexus device....sort of like what Tegra is doing with their tegra base devices

I dont think the x-phone will be as exciting as people are expecting it to be. But since this is Moto we are speaking about, I wouldnt be suprised if they managed to stick a 6000mah battery in that phone

Please don't make it sound like the things mentioned in that article are minor issues. HTC circumvented Android's own protection mechanisms and in doing so, opened up serious security and privacy vulnerabilities, not to mention toll fraud, which racks up charges on a person's bill by allowing apps (malware) to secretly send paid messages to companies that then add the charges to the sender's phone bill.

HTC ignored reports by the community and government and the settlement means they'll be monitored for the next 20 years. Unlike ZTE and Huawei, HTC is an innovative Taiwan company and their HTC One phone brings new things to the table. Samsung and HTC are probably going to be the top phone makers this year, but HTC has to get its act together. It says a lot when it has to be whipped into taking care of its customers. We as consumers should expect companies to release devices that are as secure as they're supposed to be, instead of being altered not to be.

Here's a more detailed report on HTC's settlement: HTC America Settles FTC Charges It Failed to Secure Millions of Mobile Devices Shipped to Consumers

I guess that could work if it's a pure Android experience like the Nexus 4. I see what you mean now.

$99 nexus!! Sweet dreams are made of this. This would sell out in hours, especially in developing and emerging markets: If Google can market the out of it

Please don't make it appear as HTC's negligence isn't as serious was Google's intentional misuse of private consumer information, or their own recent security flaws with the Play Store & Google Wallet.

You don't think the X-phone will be exciting, but you're excited for a device from ZTE? There's a first.

A $99 phone? Hell yeah I would be excited.
And after Google CFO said that the moto X would not be a game changer that people think it will be, I decided to order the N4. Arriving next month :)

Also Hauwei and ZTE have been on 60 minutes and other media about their invovlement with the Chinese government in "stealing" intellectual property and potentially classified government information. I will not give them my money, no matter how tempting the price.

I hope Google takes all this in account when they select their next Nexus partner(s).

I'd buy one just for the fact it's $99, and use it as a work device for pictures/notes etc. For my daily driver though I would stay with something from a company I am more familiar with.
