A couple of Glitches with my DROID / Question to DROID experts

I'm a defecting blackberry (Storm 1) user, and i have to say off bat this phone is wonderful, but not without a couple of nuisances.

1. Getting Contact PICS from Facebook - For the most part facebook updates the matching contact from my contacts list with a pic from the site. But how do i force it to update a person whos name i have as "Mike" instead of First, Last name? I have changed this contacts name to his full name as displayed in Facebook and yet facebook wont update him with a pic? This happens to at least half of my contacts whom i had as nicknames and now have added their full legal name yet facebook wont sync them.

2. Misc glitches in SMS/MMS. We've all seen the one where you come out of standby and sms ''force close/wait'' crash. But the one that pisses me off the MOST is when i try to send a sms i hit the ''compose new'' and then under "TO" i try to type a contact name and for some of my contacts NO drop down menu appears with their name to select. Its like they are not in my contacts at all. For these people i have to physically go into my contacts select them, and then click next to their name to send a message. WTF? has anyone else had this problem? This also happens intermittently, like sometimes it recognizes names sometimes it doesn't.

3. Jittery sliding through HOME screens -
Does anyone notice that the transitions from screen to screen aren't exactly smooth? Sometimes its worse than others and sliding the notification bar down seems to chugg a chugg sometimes as well. I picked up a friends ERIS and (and it pains me to say this) a friends iphone and they seem to do this task smoother yet with slower hardware. I have hope this will get fixed in the DEC 11 update (if it exists).

4. Mysterious name changes in PHONE app - sometimes ill look at my call log and try to click a contact to call (the phone confirms the gesture as the name is lit up) and is it transfers to the call screen the call is switched to some other name and it calls a different contact. I've only seen this happen like 2-3 times but it was still extremely wierd. I have also seen this happen in the SMS app where i clicked a convo and realized that the name displayed wasnt the person with whom id actually had a conversation with so i clicked HOME and came back and the phone had fixed its mistake. Extremely weird.

5. Email/Facebook Sync - I dont think im the only one who gets his emails before facebook updates and sometimes not at all. I guess i got spoiled by damn near instantaneous emails from a blackberry. I guess some sacrifices were made in the switch, though it sucks to constantly be worried is my email actually being delivered right now? Or is it off on its own world.. I haven't actually started using my computer to check emails until this phone because i feel like i cant trust that they all get delivered. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

6. Does the Phone need TASK MANAGER/ TASK KILLER?! - this is by far my biggest question. I want someone who actually knows an answer to this and doesnt just pull somethin outa their ass. I've heard both sides, that android runs like linux and that you are actually hurting performance by not loading apps to the memory... and forcing them to close; and i've heard that you are hurting performance and battery life by running un-needed processes in the background. From personal experience with TASKKILLER, i used it, it was fine, when i heard that its detrimental, i un-installed it, and have now noticed some lag from the SMS when i click to open it. Like a black screen opens and it sits for a few secs as it loads, instead of being instanteneous like it usually is. So should i use it or let the phone do its thing?

Sorry for the long rant, i just wanted to get a few things straight with the PROS :D

1. Facebook has problems with sync, this is known and I think depends more on facebook than android. I would say wait for more updates from the fbook team. I know some contacts my phone has problems with have privacy settings turned up, could be the problem.

2. Never had any of those problems with my device.

3. Lag on the home screen has only happened when I have a lot of programs open. The solution I have is your number 6 question. I have never heard of it causing problems with the phone on any forum I visit.

4. Never seen this problem.

5. I guess email has been an issue for some, I have tested my gmail account and it took about 1.5 mins to send out then return an email from a pc. If that is slow oh well. I guess I'm just not as worried about if someone poked me on facebook. The notifications part is probably again on the facebook team not the droid team.

6. Touched on it above. But I am not an expert so I guess just disregard my info if I do not meet the standards, this goes for all the info I have posted.

For Facebook to sync properly the name must be identical to their name on Facebook. It will not sync without the proper name to match with your contacts...

5. I don't think sending email is any problem that should be instantly sent. As for receiving ... my gmail and school email (through gmail as well) are instantly on my phone and my comcast has always been slow but I agree with the facebook its really annoying almost as if I don't need the app at all.

6. I personally every once in a while like to closeout programs I'm not using simply because of that Storm 1 factor that I had to put up with lol. I have not seen any performance suffer due to this on my Droid so I would say most people are going to be ok .... unless you run every app in your phone (could eventually hit a wall). I had that task killer recommended by verizon but I got the program dxTop which lets you have 4 screens and some other options .... it includes a task manager that IMO is better suited to use. Its the program you might see with two drawers .. one like normal and the other is a task manager where you just longpress and can kill a process ... also has 3 different status's: running (red), updating (yellow) and closed (white) I believe and its only like $3.

#6....Android is designed to close opened apps that have been idle for awhile if it needs the memory for something else. So you can literally have every app on your phone running and the os will close what it needs to so it can free up memory to run other apps. And from what I can tell Task Killer does not harm the os, it simply does what the os would have done eventually.

That's where some of my best answers come from :D

As others have said, the OS will reclaim resources from apps that aren't active which is pretty much what task managers do when they kill the app. The principle difference between the two is if you kill an app it's gone and there will be a small difference in startup time between restarting an app that you've previously killed and just letting the OS reload an inactive app.

I ran a task killer for a while but and religiously killed apps but don't any more and haven't noticed much of a difference in startup, battery life, etc.

It should take anywhere from seconds to 5 minutes minimum to pull your hotmail.
Yup ... there is a setting for your account how often you want it to update ... 5 minutes is the lowest. You could have your email forward to your gmail account and get it quickly if you wanted.

I tried to forward my hotmail account to gmail last week. Per the website, if your account is free, it can only be forwarded to another hotmail/livemail account. You have to have a paid account to be able to forward it elsewhere. So I can live with waiting 5 minutes for emails.

#2- I had the same problem with contacts not showing up in the "To" field when I forward messages and things like that. I double checked and sure enough the contacts that weren't showing up were set to "Home" or "Work" instead of "Cell" phone. So of course the phone wouldn't type it in since you can't exactly text a "home" phone. So you might want to check that to make sure that you don't have any of the cell phones accidentally grouped as "home" phones.

I hope this helps.

Good point jste. Also with facebook I agree I have contacs with identical names and no sync. My girlfriend for example will not sync, I also noticed that with the facebook app I can't even see her profile, that is why I feel it is a privacy issue (she is set to hide everything from people she does not know). Again just my 2 cents

I have had somewhat similar problems....When I first setup my phone with my accounts (gmail & facebook) everything synced great. All my contacts were in my phone, I could choose which gmails groups to show, contacts had their FB pictures. However, and maybe I'm just a bit picky here, I like to sort my contacts by last name. After searching the phone I didn't find an option for that. I searched gmail forums and couldn't find any easy solutions there either. So I decided to manually change my contacts in gmail to last name, first name (I only have 94 contacts so it wasn't too bad, would not recommend for anyone with many more contacts than that) so that it would update my phone. Well, it worked great for about 85% of my contacts (to include FB contacts), but for the other 15% no matter what I did it seemed the Facebook name was persistent (even though other FB contacts changed to last name, first name). I tried un-joining and re-joining contacts to the FB profiles and nothing. I ended up turning off the sync option for FB and now my contacts are all sorted by last name, first name, but they don't have any pictures.

Has anyone else encountered this? Are there any options? I would be great if there was just an option in the phone to sort by last name.
