A few concerns about the MAXX!

1. Is anyone concerned about not being able to replace the battery? I mean if the battery will no longer charge you may as well throw the phone away, or am i missing something here?

2. Is there any way to backup the contents without rooting it? The MAXX does not use a storage card, so how do you back up the phone?

3. Verizon said that if the phone is rooted, it changes the Kernal and they look for this if you bring the phone in. If you unroot the phone will it restore the original kernal?

4. How safe is it to backup to the Verizon or Google cloud? Also, does it backup internal apps, settings and data?

Thank you for any help. I never had a phone before without being able to change the battery or add a card for storage.

1.) No, you should be fine. You can always have the battery replaced professionally or if you ever need a warranty replacement it will have a newer battery. I don't think battery failure is covered under TEC (extended warranty). That's according to users here but it may be.

2.) Back up the files to Google Drive or your PC.

3.) I haven't rooted before but I believe you can. However, I believe the phone marks it as being rooted before and how many times with no way to reset.

4. Safe but I don't believe it saves application data. You'll have images and such backed up though.

1 I still have an original RAZR and the battery is still good, it's been used for the past year and a half as a main phone... It's what 4 years old now? Also I know that if there is a problem with the battery you can have it replaced or maybe even do it yourself.

3 there is no way to flash a Kernal space out bootloaders are locked. Verizon may be able to see it has been rooted though, it's a chance one has to take if rooting. And most Verizon stores will not know how to check, when sending it in for a replacement I have never seen someone pay because of this as long as most of the firmware is back to stock and factory reset is performed.

I was also surprised to find out that there was no support for micro SD, and by that point I already purchased the phone. Once rooted and debloated, with ss installed on now on rom slot 1. I have installed Xposed and have everything I want/need. Have not had a problem with running out of memory yet. There is an option to add a micro SD via mini microsd card reader by Meenova. You can carry it on your key chain and use when necessary.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your post.

I was recently in a Verizon store and they told me that the first thing they do when a phone comes in is to check the kernal. Any and all warranties, manufacturer or extended, are voided if the kernal has changed and it will if the phone has been rooted.

As for backing up to Google Drive: I would like the files on my desktop HD. Seems more secure there.
1.) Is Google Drive the same as the Google Cloud?
2.) Would I be able to see the detail of what is backed up?
3.) Would I have any control over what is backed up or restored?

Thanks

Then put them on your hard drive. I copied everything to mine a few days ago. Use the included charging cable to hook it up to your computer. It will install drivers for the phone, then you basically copy & paste the internal memory over to your HD.

You cannot change the kernel if the bootloader is locked, so at least that's not a worry.

I'm not all that concerned about the battery - it's big enough that even a 20% drop over the lifetime will be more than good enough.

Helium backup is very good unrooted and can back up to online Drive services. I use an app called dropsync to automatically backup key internal storage folders to Dropbox as they are changed, so even in a catastrophe I'll still have my important files.

I have never once had them check the kernel have rooted all my phones. Even sent a few back for warranty replacement that I couldn't unroot.

Thanks for your response.

I just want to confirm that you are saying I will be able to back up the internal memory on the MAXX without anything other than what comes in the standard box (software, cables, etc). I have been unable to back up anything other than my micro SD card on my Droid X. Have I been doing something wrong, or is the MAXX different, possibly because it has a higher level operating system?

Thanks

Wow! I don't know if you have been lucky, or I'm just chicken. Maybe it has to do with where you're located. Thanks for your response.

Are you sure? Does the Maxx have to be rooted? I am pretty sure I tried it out the week I got the Maxx and it failed.

Yes I am sure, as I have used the app to backup. I am not rooted.

I've stopped using it because each time you restart the phone you need to connect it to a pc and run the companion process, and I'm often away from my computer.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think that JUST Rooting changes the kernel. It's when you start playing around with custom ROMs that may or may not change the kernel.

As far as the battery. As strong as it is you should not have to charge the phone more than once a day. This along will increase the life of the battery past the time people normally keep phones. Even 3 to 4 years no problem!

What are you using to backup?

I use SMSBackup+ to backup text messages and call logs automatically as they are received/sent. I use an app called DropSync (I also bought a Pro key)to upload all photos and videos to Dropbox (what's great about Dropsync is that any photos that I delete from Dropbox also delete from the phone). I also have Dropsync watch my downloads folder, and a few others (including my Plume app settings backup folder - every once in a while I export the settings, in case I've changed things up a bit.)

I don't use any other apps that only store data on the phone that I would be concerned about losing.

To be honest, I don't know. It sounds like you are more tech savy than I am. The rep at the Verizon store connected the two, but she may be wrong. If it doesn't effect the kernel, what does it effect? What is the telltale sign?

Just get insurance if you're worried. Never had asurion question any claim I've ever made.
